Massage for Pain Relief

We are faced with many options for relief from pain and suffering. A recent US survey indicates that massage is becoming an increasingly popular technique for providing pain relief to sufferers. The pain from sports injuries, migraines, headaches, arthritis and other common pains may be alleviated by a visit to (or from!) your remedial massage therapist. Massaging pressure points and trigger points to facilitate blood flow are considered to be key elements for massage providing its pain relief.

From US survey data, typically around one in five Americans received a therapeutic massage in a given year and about 75% of them would recommend it to others for pain relief.

Amongst those who had received a massage, 24% of women indicated that massage therapy was their first choice for providing greatest relief from pain (compared with medications which scored 22%). Interestingly men placed medications ahead of massage therapy (24% compared with 18%).

Amongst 18-24 year olds, massage therapy was over three times more popular for pain relief compared with medications (34% to 10%) and 48% of 18-24 year old have used massage to relieve pain.

Other data from surveys finds that:
  • around 90% of Americans believe that massage can be good for a person's health
  • 93% agree that "massage can be effective for pain relief"
  • 73% of those who had a massage at some time would recommend it to someone they knew.
  • Amongst survey responders who had spoken about massage with their health care professional, 57% had said that they had either strongly recommended massage or encouraged them to get a massage.
