You wake up one morning with a crick in your neck. You struggle to turn your head and there is a throbbing pain in your head. Or maybe your back has locked up and you can’t bend forward. Positional release may be the answer to your pain. Positional release is a safe and effective treatment technique that can assist in reducing pain and bringing an end to muscle spasms.
In the 1950s in California a Dr. Lawrence Jones was attempting g to treat a patient who had been in severe back pain for about 10 weeks. After several treatments the patient had shown no signs of improving and the back pain that the patient could not sleep for more than 15 minutes at any one time.
During one consultation, Dr. Jones tried to find a position that was comfortable for the client and he put the patient into a number of positions until he found one that was relatively surprisingly comfortable for the patient. The patient was left in this position for a while and when the patient moved again the back pain was significantly reduced.
Jones eventually called this technique “Strain and Counter Strain” and subsequent variations of this technique are referred to as Positional Release.
Within the muscles and tendons there are sensors known as proprioceptors. When the body is maintained in a comfortable position for a sufficient time then effectively these proprioceptors are resets. With a changed level of stimulation of the sensors, the musculoskeletal system can go back to a healthy condition with less muscular tension, elimination of spasms and reduced pain levels.
The key to Positional release is to create the right amount of tension and torsion in the joints and muscles to allow the proprioceptors to reset. Along with the neck and back pain mentioned earlier Positional releases may also assist with arthritis, whiplash, sciatica carpel tunnel, fibromyalgia, etc.
